** Hydrating your skin
————————————————————
During this time of year, it’s common for your skin to be dry, itchy and cracked. It’s important to take care of your skin to prevent pain and even infection. Here are a few tips on nourishing your skin from the inside out.

1.     Hydrate – Drink 6-8 cups of water per day, and even more when exercising. Not only will your skin thank you, but every cell in your body. Cleanse, nourish, and hydrate.

2.     Moisturize – Apply a small amount of grapeseed oil, olive oil, or coconut oil after a shower to your skin. It is a pure way to nourish your skin without added chemicals found in your regular moisturizer.

3.     Humidify – In these dry months of the year it is often necessary to add water to the air to prevent the drying effects of the air. Add a humidifier to your bedroom. Bonus: Add a few drops of eucalyptus when feeling congested for both hydrating and infection-fighting properties.

4.     Feed your skin – Including healthy oils in your diet not only feeds your skin, but your whole body. A diet high in fruits and vegetables provides your skin with antioxidants and rich vitamins and minerals for added anti-aging properties.

** Beating the winter blues
————————————————————
If you are like me, you’re ready for the snow to melt away and the days to be filled with birds chirping and sunshine. Many people experience mood changes this time of year and may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Do you experience the following symptoms?
* Loss of interest
* Moodiness
* Nervous exhaustion
* Lack of motivation
* Sleep problems

Reasons for SAD:
* Lack of sunlight and vitamin D
* Less time outside or playing sports
* Change in activity and sleep patterns
* Less social interaction with others

What to do about it:
* Get active. Aim for 30 minutes every day i.e. brisk walk, swimming, fitness classes, yoga
* Enjoy daily fresh air, even if only a few minutes
* Join social activities such as a local fitness class, art class, church group, book club, drama, dance or choir
* Eat a well balanced diet, particularly high in fruits and vegetables
* Talk to your Naturopathic Doctor about specific nutrients and herbs that may benefit your specific needs
