Warning: Spicy! Not for the faint of tastebuds…

Coughing, sneezing, and runny noses are just some of the symptoms I’m seeing quite often in my practice this time of year. I have been writing out my immune boosting tea prescription on a near daily basis for people for acute use or to have on hand for when a bug strikes in the home. That being said, our body and immune systems are fully equipped to deal with the viruses and bacteria that inevitably surround us every day when we are in a healthy state. The best way to avoid cold and flus is to make sure we are sleeping well, eating well, staying hydrated, exercising, and managing our stress. When one of these pillars is removed, our body is much more likely to “catch a cold”, which is contrary to popular belief. Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water is a good idea as well.

Our body has a way of talking to us through the symptoms we experience and I believe that colds are a way of making us slow down. Be mindful in this hectic holiday season to take care of yourself and ensure that you can present the best version of yourself each day.

Ingredients

4 cups of water

Juice from 1 lemon

2 cloves of garlic, chopped

Thumb-sized piece of ginger, sliced

Pinch of cayenne pepper

Honey to taste

*To reduce the kick, cut back on the cayenne and garlic if you’re having a hard time with the flavour (but really…it’s not as bad as it sounds!)

Instructions

Combine all ingredients (except the honey) in a pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes, allowing all of the medicinal properties to infuse into the water. Drink 2-4 cups at the onset of a cold.

*If you’re taking pharmaceutical medication, talk to your Naturopathic Doctor to see if this tea is safe for you.

Have a safe and healthy Christmas season!
